What happens if it rains? It’s a question that couples often ask me either before they book me as their wedding photographer or when we chat at their pre-wedding planning meeting. My answer is ‘that’s totally up to you’.
If it rains on your wedding day you can embrace it and head out into the weather. You can let go of any worries about getting your clothes dirty and you can stop worrying about your hair getting soaked. The weather is part of the story of your wedding day and if you embrace it you’ll have interesting and dynamic pictures that show your day authentically and as it happened.
At Pip and Luke’s wedding atTunnels Beaches in Ilfracombe it rained and it rained and it rained. I was soaked to the skin by the end of their outdoor ceremony – you can’t really hold an umbrella and a camera at the same time – and we were all more than a little bit blown around by the end of their portrait session. It was totally worth it though and while I braved the weather, Luke and Pip braved scrambling over rocks, taking off their shoes and standing in lashing rain in their wedding outfits.
I loved the way they embraced the rain and didn’t let it dampen their spirits. They wanted an outdoor wedding and they still managed to spend parts of the day outside and, most importantly, they couldn’t have been more cheerful all of the way through. It can be disappointing if you have a fixed idea of what your wedding will be like if that idea doesn’t work out but if you let that go, like Luke and Pip did, and focus on having an amazing time with your friends and family there’s no way the weather can ruin one of your happiest days ever.
