Alternative wedding photography ScotlandIf the wedding I shared on the blog last week was a concentrated dose of Summer, Laura and Martin’s Timberyard wedding in Edinburgh was perfectly Autumnal.  Hazy autumn light, some of the most beautiful flowers I’ve seen all year from the amazing Pyrus,  a laid back day full of laughter and joy and OH MY GOSH THE FOOD.  The food, the food, the food.  If you’re ever in Edinburgh you must go to Timberyard for dinner.  Trust me.  And if you’re looking for a contemporary foodie wedding venue then Timberyard is perfect.

We also had perfect blue skies up at Arthur’s Seat and it was wonderful to whisk Laura and Martin away from their guests, to give them time to hang out together while we took some portraits against the backdrop of the Edinburgh skyline.

Here’s what Laura and Martin had to say about their day.

The Beginning

We met 12 years ago in a dodgy club in Newcastle, six weeks before we both went to different Universities.  We got engaged in Bergen, Norway the day before our 10 year anniversary in the middle of a woodland walk at the top of a hill overlooking Bergen. We were engaged just over two years before our wedding day.

We wanted our wedding to be held somewhere we could go back to and re-visit, that was also somewhere we loved. We came across Timberyard restaurant through the magic of Google and the fact that is was in Edinburgh, one of our favourite cities was the icing on the cake.

Timberyard fitted everything we could have wanted in a venue, amazing atmosphere, intimate warm and beautiful Scandinavian-style interiors, a gorgeous little outdoor courtyard, plus lots and lots of candlelight. They also make unbelievable food as well as all their own soft drinks, we’re major foodies so this was heaven for us! We also wanted somewhere that really appreciated the importance of details.

The outfits

I fell in love with my dress after seeing it online (Phase Eight). It was the first one I tried on and I knew straight away it was the one. I’ve always loved the 1920’s, so the all-over beading and column shape with a keyhole back detail was perfect. I also had a beautiful hair comb which was a gift from my Granny, from a little bridal shop in Northumberland, and I wore my own jewellery including some Norwegian earrings from my grandparents.

Martin’s suit took him a while to find as he had a very specific idea about the type of checked tweed he wanted, as well as it being a three-piece. Eventually we found the perfect one at Jigsaw. He also had a personalised tie pin as a gift from his parents.

The Flowers and Decor

We wanted a real Autumnal forest feel and found Pyrus as they’d dressed our venue before. We wanted very natural and and simple but striking table decorations with lots of coloured glass bottles, Autumnal botanical dressing, and candlelight, with lots of bits and pieces for our guests to look at. We asked for rich and unstructured bouquets and posies with a real mixture of textures and Autumnal colours.

The Ceremony

We didn’t tailor our vows, the ceremony was short and sweet as I was really nervous about that part of the day and had a bit of an overwhelmed wobble as the doors opened! We had lovely heartfelt readings by two of our close friends Nick and Rachelle.

The Entertainment

We had Edinburgh group, The Quartet playing music during the ceremony, and Glaswegian band Splendid Gentlemen playing from 8pm-Midnight. Both were fantastic and really helped make the day special.

The Wedding Photography

Laura was an absolutely pleasure to work with from start to finish, super professional and friendly, and made sure we made the most of every opportunity that came along throughout the day! The previews we’ve seen look amazing and exactly what we were hoping for!

The Words of Wisdom

Other married couples said to us to keep reminding yourself to appreciate how amazing the day is from start to finish as it passes so quickly. We really tried to remember this and it definitely helped to stop the day from disappearing too quickly!
