Alternative destination wedding, Fort Dunree, Donegal, Ireland
Fort Dunree sits nestled on a rugged hillside, over looking Lough Swilly. Crumbling out buildings line the landscape and colourful paper chains flutter in the breeze. On a helipad over looking the water, rows of chairs sit waiting for Laura and Danny’s outdoor wedding ceremony and hand fasting. Guests appear over the crest of the hill and walk down to the ceremony area to take their seats. Danny walks down with his brother and they fire up the petrol generator, to start their mid century modern record player. A last minute petrol crisis is averted by Laura’s brother John and he sprints down the hill, bringing more fuel.
Laura walks down the hill with her bridesmaids
Guests hug and laugh and take their seats, as Laura walks down the hill with her dad and bridesmaids. The sun shines as Laura and Danny exchange their vows. A handfasting ceremony takes place. Brightly coloured ribbons are tied by members of their friends and family, each with a specific meaning for their future life together. They are married. They kiss. Their friends and family cheer, before following them back up the hill and lining up to congratulate them. A vintage caravan serves ice cream and cocktails in jam jars, as guests sit on deck chairs.
Portraits in the wilds of the Donegal landscape
We head off into the wilds of the landscape for some group shots against the backdrop of crumbling former army barracks. It’s then time for portraits. A dream come true as a wedding photographer. Beautiful landscapes and decaying buildings make the perfect backdrop. I whisk Laura and Danny away as the sun sets and then the party gets started.
Dinner and dancing
It’s time for dinner. Long trestle tables are lined with colourful 60s inspired runners and terrariums filled with tiny flamingos dot the tables. Streamers hang festively from beams and the words RIOT are spelled out in balloons, to commemorate a recently departed friend. Laura’s brother has organised the food and guests line up to help themselves. Laura and Danny take to the dance floor for their first dance and then Danny’s brother’s band kick off the rest of the evening’s dancing.
