Alternative wedding photographer in Birmingham, the Midlands and across the UK
I really love working as an alternative wedding photographer. I thought I’d take some time to talk about what being an alternative wedding photographer means to me. Keep reading to find out how I can provide a creative, documentary approach to your wedding!
Working as an alternative wedding photographer doesn’t necessarily mean photographing alternative weddings or alternative couples (although it does sometimes!). It means taking a unique approach and working with couples who are looking for something a little different.
From warehouse weddings to elopements to rock venues
Lots of my couples are a little or a lot alternative. From warehouse weddings to rock venue weddings to humanist weddings to small elopements to self-officiated weddings on the side of a cliff, what unites my couples is the desire to have a wedding that’s all about who they are as people.
Alternative wedding photography means focussing on all of the things that make you and your day unique. For me, it also means using a creative documentary wedding photography approach to authentically tell your story.
Alternative wedding photography including quirky weddings, non-traditional weddings, elopements and creative documentary weddings
I call myself a creative documentary wedding photographer rather than an alternative wedding photographer most of the time. This is because I love to shoot diverse couples and diverse weddings. While I shoot a lot of alternative couples, I also work with couples who wouldn’t describe themselves as alternative. What’s consistent across my approach is my storytelling. I focus on each couple and what makes you and your day unique. Also joy. Joy is my absolute favourite thing to photograph!
I focus heavily on the story of the day. From the obvious moments you’d expect (first kiss, first dance, emotional vows and belly laughs on the dance floor) to the in-between moments. I love quiet interactions between people and the details of the day.
Your wedding, your way!
I love to work with couples who are doing their wedding their way. Some of my favourite alternative wedding photography can be found below and here are some links to some non-traditional weddings I’ve photographed:
Jacquline and Henry’s Hackney elopement
Andrew and Dina’s Barbican Conservatory wedding
Jess and Bill’s epic festival garden party wedding
Sarah and Daniel’s self-officiated Westcove House Wedding
Steph and John’s Derry Playhouse wedding
Alternative wedding photographer reviews
Here’s a handful of reviews from weddings I’ve photographed for alternative couples across the UK and beyond. If you do want to read more reviews pop over to the ‘raves’ section of my site.
It was such a pleasure to work with Babb Photo. Laura was lovely it was like having extra guests except you get the best photos ever. afterwards! Every bit of the process was enjoyable and easy. I chose Laura because I knew the quality of their work from a friend’s wedding and I wanted the same. Simply put – we had the best experience with Babb Photo for our wedding photography. Just an incredible photographer and a great person. The quality of the experience and the product can’t be beaten. Seriously though, I’ve deleted about four sentences saying the same thing in different words. I was fangirling. But really. She’s good! – Steph and John
A photography Ninja!
Laura is a photography ninja! She captured some beautiful moments and we didn’t even notice her doing it. She was one of the kindest, most calming and lovely people we had the pleasure of meeting during our wedding planning. I can’t recommend her highly enough. We’ve decided she should have some higher role than ‘just’ photographer. I think she was probably crucial in keeping the day together! However, that’s a testament again to Laura, she was unobtrusive whilst also getting all the photos we wanted. This has resulted insomething beautiful. We decided to book Laura because her photography is incredible, but she also fitted with our personalities and just made us feel so secure about everything. Laura is amazing, supportive and so talented. She made us look beautiful and we both agreed she was one of the best decisions we made! – Alex and Gudrun
Working in publishing, I place an awful lot of importance on visuals and photography. I stumbled across Laura’s work while I was browsing a few wedding blogs, and that was it, I knew that she was the photographer for us. I love the fun, personality and sheer joy that she manages to capture in her photos. We found it very easy to work with Laura. She indulged in our whimsical ideas so we had a lot of fun on the day. And we absolutely love the photos. Brian got overexcited and posted them on Facebook, and we’ve had quite a few ‘best wedding photos ever!’ comments from people, plus quite a few self-professed non-wedding people tell us that they’re a little bit obsessed with looking at the pictures from our day! – Laura and Brian
